On June 17, the reporter learned from China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. that after four years of renovation and expansion, the century-old Beijing Fengtai Station will open for operation on June 20 with a new look, adding a new urban landmark to the capital Beijing.

The rebuilt Beijing Fengtai Station is the largest railway hub passenger station in Asia. It will arrange the departure and arrival of trains for multiple lines including the Beijing-Guangzhou High-Speed ​​Railway, Beijing-Shanghai Railway and Beijing-Kowloon Railway. In the initial stage of operation, 120 passenger trains will be arranged.

Fengtai Railway Station was built in 1895. It once served the old Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway, Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Beijing-Shanghai Railway and other lines, and provided passenger and freight transportation, train marshaling technical operations and other services. With the rapid development of the capital's urban construction and railways, the relevant businesses undertaken by the station were successively transferred to Beijing West Railway Station, Fengtai West Railway Station and other stations. By 2010, all transportation services were suspended, and the renovation and expansion project was implemented in September 2018. The reconstructed Beijing Fengtai Station has a building area of ​​about 400,000 square meters, which can accommodate up to 14,000 people waiting for trains at the same time per hour, with 32 arrival and departure lines and 32 passenger terminal platforms.

Beijing Fengtai Station is the first extra-large station in China to adopt a double-deck overlapping design for high-speed and conventional railway yards, forming a three-dimensional transportation mode of "high-speed railway on the top floor, conventional railway on the ground, and subway underground", which facilitates passengers to "seamlessly" transfer between urban transportation; it has built a humane and convenient passenger service system and barrier-free facilities covering the entire station, which can provide ticket sales, inquiries, public security certificate issuance, express delivery, reservations for key passengers, and temporary ticket changes for urgent passengers; it adopts photovoltaic power generation systems, natural lighting systems, and natural ventilation systems, which can greatly save construction investment and energy conservation and consumption reduction in future operations.

According to Xu Hui, chief engineer of the Beijing Fengtai Station Project Department of China Railway Construction Group, the construction unit, during the construction, the construction personnel comprehensively applied cutting-edge information technologies and intelligent equipment such as BIM, cloud computing, mobile Internet, and the Internet of Things to make the construction of Beijing Fengtai Station more "smart", safer, and more efficient. Among them, the total steel consumption of the steel structure of Beijing Fengtai Station is nearly 200,000 tons, the number of steel structure components is more than 10,000, and the amount of steel bars is 140,000 tons. The project team of China Railway Construction Group has uniquely numbered more than 10,000 main components and more than 70,000 welds, giving them all traceable "identity cards".

"The team also introduced intelligent equipment such as drones, intelligent automatic rebar cutting robots, and welding robots, allowing construction sites to transform from traditional manual operations to collaborative construction by humans and robots, which not only improved construction efficiency but also greatly improved construction accuracy." Xu Hui said.

After the opening of Beijing Fengtai Station, the functions of Beijing West, Beijing and other stations in the Beijing Railway Hub will be optimized and adjusted accordingly, the division of labor among stations will be more scientific and reasonable, and Beijing's comprehensive transportation service functions will be further enhanced, greatly facilitating people's travel.
