[Source] The whole herb of the Menispermum officinale plant of the Menispermaceae family. Available all year round. Use fresh or dried.

[Original form] A climbing vine, about 1 meter long, the whole plant is densely covered with yellow-white hairs. The leaves are simple and alternate, cordate-round, 1.5 to 2 cm long and 1.5 to 2.5 cm wide, with rounded or concave tip, cordate base, entire margin, dark green above, sparsely covered with white pubescence, and light green below, densely covered with yellowish-brown pubescence. The flowers are small and light yellow; the male flowers are cymes, axillary, with 4 sepals (5-6), 4 petals, fused into a cup, 4 anthers, fused, arranged in a circle at the top of the stamen column, and transversely fissured; the female flowers are racemes, clustered in the axils of leaf-like bracts, with 1 sepal, fused petals, 1 stamen, and a 3-lobed style. The drupe is oval and red when ripe. The seeds are flat and horseshoe-shaped. Fruiting period is from April to May.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in wet places such as tropical river banks, beaches, wastelands, cracks in hillside rocks or bushes. Distributed in Yunnan.

[Chemical composition] The whole herb contains tin styraxine. The root contains D-quercetin, quercetin, quercetin, alkaloids, granular alkaloids, quercetin, tin-sporin, and (++)-4″-methoxyquercetin. The root bark contains alkaloids, quercetin, quercetin, granular alkaloids, mennisamine, tin-sporin, and soft-toothed flower root root alkaloids.
