[Original form] Nanmu is a large tree, more than 30m tall. Bud scales are grayish yellow appressed with long hairs; branchlets are usually thinner, angular or nearly cylindrical, and grayish yellow or grayish brown with long or short soft hairs. Leaves are leathery; petioles are thin, 1-2.2cm long and hairy; leaf blades are elliptical, rarely lanceolate or oblanceolate, 7-11cm long, 2.5-4cm wide, apex acuminate, or sickle-shaped, base cuneate, shiny and glabrous above or with soft hairs along the lower half of the midrib, densely short soft hairs below, and long soft hairs on the veins. The thyrse is very open and hairy; the flowers are bisexual; the perianth has 6 lobes, nearly equal in size, 3-3.5cm long and 2-2.5cm wide; the fertile stamens are 9, about 2mm long and hairy; the staminodes are triangular, stalked and hairy; the ovary is spherical, glabrous or only the upper half and style are sparsely hairy, and the stigma is disc-shaped. The fruit is elliptical, 1.1-1.4cm long and 6-7mm in diameter; the persistent tepals are ovate, leathery, closely attached, pubescent on both sides or pubescent outside. The flowering period is April-May, and the fruiting period is September-October.

【Cultivation】 1. Biological characteristics: It prefers warm and humid climate. Seedlings and young trees are shade-tolerant, while mature trees prefer light. The roots have strong sprouting power and can withstand intermittent short-term waterlogging. It is suitable for cultivation in valleys, depressions, the lower part of shady slopes and riverside terraces, where the soil is deep and loose, well-drained, and neutral or slightly acidic loam.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The branches are cylindrical, of varying lengths, with a diameter of 0.3-2.5cm. The surface is gray-brown or gray-white, the young branches are lighter in color, and have protruding, sparse, dot-like lenticels. It is brittle, easy to break, has an uneven cross section, is light yellow in color, and has a small pith. The leaves are curled and wrinkled, and become rectangular or oblanceolate when flattened. They are 6-11cm long and 1.5-4cm wide, with acuminate tip, cuneate base, entire margin, and green on both sides. The upper surface is slightly glossy, and the lower surface is covered with soft hairs, mostly on the main veins. The petiole is 0.7-1.3cm long and covered with soft hairs. It has a fragrant smell, light taste and is slightly astringent.
