[Other names] Huangchangshan, Jiguchangshan, Jigufeng, Fenggumu, Baichangshan, Dajindao, Shuqi [leaf]

[Source] This product is the dried root of Dichroa febrifuga Lour., a plant of the Saxifragaceae family. Its young leaves are called " Shuqi " and are also used for medicinal purposes. The roots are dug up in autumn, the fibrous roots are removed, washed and dried. The branches and leaves are collected in summer and dried.

[Properties] This product is cylindrical, often bent and twisted, or branched, 9 to 15 cm long and 0.5 to 2 cm in diameter. The surface is brown-yellow with fine longitudinal lines. The outer bark is easy to peel off, revealing the light yellow wood at the peeling point. It is hard and not easy to break, and dust will fly when it breaks; the cross section is yellow-white, and the rays are white and radial. Odorless, bitter taste.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of this product: rows of cork cells. The cortex is narrow, and a few cells contain resin blocks or bundles of calcium oxalate needles. The phloem is narrow and contains more bundles of calcium oxalate raphes. The cambium shows irregular wavy rings. The xylem occupies the main part, which is all lignified, and the rays vary in width; the vessels are polygonal, scattered individually or gathered in groups, and some contain yellow infillings. The thin-walled cells contain starch granules.

[Processing] Changshan : remove impurities, separate into large and small, soak, moisten thoroughly, cut into thin slices, and dry in the sun.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, pungent, cold; poisonous.

【Functions and indications】Prevents malaria and eliminates phlegm. Used for malaria. The functions and indications of Shuqi are similar to those of Changshan, but the effects are slightly weaker.
