There are slender creeping rhizomes, some of which are thickened into spindle shape and sometimes several are connected. The stem is erect and triangular. The leaves are clustered at the base of the stem, with the leaf sheaths closed and wrapped around them. The leaves are narrow linear, 20-60 cm long, 2-5 mm wide, pointed at the apex, entire, with parallel veins, the main vein is raised on the back, and hard in texture; the inflorescence is compound spike-shaped, 3-6 in number arranged in an umbrella shape at the top of the stem, with 2-4 leaf-like involucres at the base, almost the same length as or longer than the inflorescence; the spikelets are broad linear, slightly flat, 1-3 cm long, about 1.5 mm wide; there are 2 rows of glumes, arranged closely, ovate to oblong-ovate, about 3 mm long, membranous, purple-red on both sides, and with several veins; each stamen has 1 flower, 3 stamens, and asexuality is linear; there are 3 stigmas, which are filamentous. The nutlets are oblong-obovate and triangular. Flowering period is from June to August. Fruiting period is from July to November. 【Usage and Dosage】: For internal use: decoct in water, 5-10g; or make into pills or powder. It is mainly used for distension and pain in the ribs; breast swelling; hernia pain; irregular menstruation; abdominal fullness and pain; belching, acid regurgitation, nausea; abdominal pain during menstruation; metrorrhagia and leukorrhea; and fetal movement disorder. It is used for liver depression and qi stagnation, distension and pain in the chest, flanks, and abdomen, indigestion, chest and abdominal fullness, abdominal pain due to cold hernia, breast pain, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea. (1) Regulating Qi and relieving depression: Used to relieve chest, flank, stomach and abdominal distension and pain caused by liver qi stagnation. Combined with Bupleurum and Citrus aurantium, it is used to treat chest and flank pain. Combined with galangal (named Liangfu Pills), it is used to treat stomach cold pain.
