[Original form] Deciduous small tree, 2-6m high. The bark is dark gray-brown; it is branched, with dark brown twigs and white lenticels. Leaves are alternate; petioles are red, 3-6mm long; leaf blades are papery or hard papery, oblong, elliptical or ovate-lanceolate, 5-9cm long, 2-4.5cm wide, with acuminate, acute or obtuse tips, sometimes slightly caudate, green above and light green below; leaf veins are red, with 3-5 pairs of lateral veins, obvious on both sides. The flowers are sessile, 2-4 flowers arranged in short spikes or spiral cymes that are nearly capitulate, sometimes solitary, with a peduncle 0.5-1cm long, which can grow to 1-2cm when fruiting; most of the calyx tube is fused with the ovary, with 4-5 calyx teeth at the upper end, and no epicalyx; the corolla is tubular, yellow-white or light red, 8-14mm long, 3-4mm wide, with 4-5 calyx teeth, slightly rolled outward; the stamens are attached to the corolla tube, and there is a bundle of short hairs on the lower part of the corolla where the stamens are attached; the ovary is half buried in the disk, with 3 chambers in the lower part and 1 chamber in the upper part. The nut is oval or oblong, and when mature is almost completely surrounded by the calyx tube that is enlarged into a pot shape. The outside of the calyx tube is red or purple-red, and the base is supported by a slightly swollen "base" with a small tooth on the edge of the base. Flowers and leaves bloom together. The flowering period is from February to April, and the fruiting period is from April to June.
