The efficacy and function of Yunnan Schisandra chinensis root

Yunnan Schisandra root is a common Chinese medicine. It can be used for medicinal purposes as well as for food. Moreover, the effects and functions of Yunnan Schisandra root are quite comprehensive. Let’s take a look at it together.

[Other names] Xiangshiteng, Tiegusan, Xiaoxueteng

[Source] Medicinal material source: The roots and stems of Schisandra yunnanensis, a plant of the Schisandraceae family.

[Original form] Deciduous vine. The twigs are twisted, slightly longitudinally ridged, and have scattered long round lenticels. Simple leaves are alternate; petiole is about 3cm long; leaves are nearly leathery; leaf blade is broadly ovate, 8-15cm long, 4-8cm wide, apex acuminate or acute, base is broadly cuneate to truncate, margin is entire or wavy, green above, glabrous, with scattered pinkish-white spots, pinkish-green below, slightly frosted. Flowers are unisexual and dioecious; solitary in leaf axils; flowers are yellow, about 1.5 cm in diameter; tepals are 8-10, rarely 13, the outermost tepals are 2-6 mm long and 2-5 mm wide, the inner tepals are 4-7 mm long and 3-7 mm wide; stamen column is 4-6 mm in diameter, stamens are numerous, separate, in 3-4 rows; pistil carpels are numerous and nearly spherical. The aggregate infructescence is up to 10 cm long and red when ripe. Seed coat has obvious tubercles. The flowering period is May-June, and the fruiting period is July-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in broad-leaved forests at an altitude of 1100-2300m.

【Functions and indications】Regulating Qi and strengthening the spleen; promoting blood circulation and regulating menstruation. Mainly used for abdominal distension and pain; indigestion; dysmenorrhea; irregular menstruation; rheumatic pain; sprains and injuries

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 10-25g; or soak in wine.
