[Original morphology] Iris membranaceus is a perennial herb. The base of the plant is sparsely covered with hair-like fibers remaining from old leaves. The rhizome is thick, brown-yellow, and the fibrous roots are yellow-white with few branches. The leaves are sword-shaped or sickle-shaped, 10-18cm long, 1-1.8cm wide, short and gradually pointed at the tip, yellow-white sheath-like at the base, and wider in the middle. The flower stalk is about 10 cm long and has no stem leaves; there are 3 bracts, membranous, with reddish-purple edges, containing 2 flowers; the flowers are blue-purple, up to 6 cm in diameter; the pedicel is very short; the upper part of the perianth tube is expanded into a trumpet shape, the outer perianth lobes are obovate, with yellow hair-like appendages on the midrib, and the inner perianth lobes are obovate and erect; there are 3 stamens; the branches are lavender, the lobes at the tip are narrowly triangular, and the ovary is fusiform. The capsule is 5-7.5cm long and 3cm in diameter. It has no obvious beak at the tip, but is slightly swollen into a ring shape with 6 prominent ribs. It splits open at maturity. The flowering period is April-May, and the fruiting period is June-July.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown on sunny sides of rocky slopes or beside ditches.
