[Source] Medicinal material source: The cones of the juniper plant of the Cupressaceae family.

[Original form] A creeping shrub, less than 1m high, rarely an upright shrub or small tree. The branches are densely packed, the bark is gray-brown and cracked into thin flakes; the branches of annual branches are cylindrical, with a diameter of about 1mm. Leaf type II: Young trees often have spiny leaves, 3-7mm long, concave on the upper side, arched on the lower side, with oblong or strip-shaped glands in the middle; mature trees mostly have scale leaves, with oval or oblong in the middle of the back; female cones are drooping, or initially upright and then drooping. The cones grow at the top of the downward-curving twigs, are inverted triangular or forked-spherical, 5-8mm long and 5-9mm in diameter, and are brown, purple-blue or black when ripe, with a little white powder. Seeds 1-4 (-5), mostly 2-3, slightly flattened, 4-5mm long, obtuse or slightly pointed at apex, with longitudinal ridges and resin grooves.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown on rocky slopes or in coniferous and broad-leaved forests at an altitude of 1100-2800 (-3300) m. It also grows on sand dunes.

[Properties] Identification of properties: dried mature cones are mostly triangular spherical, with a diameter of 5-9mm; brown to purple-blue or black, rarely with white ridges; 1-4 seeds, often oval, slightly flattened, 4-5mm long, blunt or slightly pointed at the apex, with longitudinal ridges and resin grooves. Slight smell, slightly astringent taste.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; pungent; slightly cold

【Functions and indications】Dispel wind and clear heat; promote urination. Mainly used for headache; eyes tearing up when exposed to wind; blurred vision; difficulty urinating

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3-9g.
