[Original form] Black olive is a large evergreen tree, 10-16m tall. A sticky aromatic resin. The bark is gray-brown and smooth; the twigs are brown-green and glabrous. Odd-pinnate compound leaves are alternate, 30-65cm long; there are 15-21 leaflets, leathery, oblong to ovate-elliptical, 5-15cm long, 3.5-7cm wide, gradually pointed or acute at the apex, oblique at the base, entire, shiny and glabrous above, smooth below; reticulate veins are obvious on both sides. Flowers are bisexual or unisexual and bisexual flowers coexist; inflorescences are axillary, loose thyrses, longer than compound leaves; calyx is cup-shaped, 3-5-lobed, about 2.5mm long in male flowers and 3.5-4mm long in female flowers; petals are about 8mm long in female flowers; stamens are 6, attached to the edge of the disk, not longer than the corolla; pistils are glabrous, absent in male flowers, ovary superior, usually 3-chambered. The drupe is ovate to elliptical, slightly triangular, 3.5-4.5cm long, 1.5-2cm wide, purple-black when ripe, with a smooth surface, wooden core, blunt at both ends, and 1-2 seeds inside; it is not certain whether it is moderately degenerate. The flowering period is from April to May, and the fruiting period is from May to November.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in plains, hills and mountain mixed woods at an altitude of 540-1280m, often cultivated.
