[Other names] Polygonum multiflorum root, Polygonum aviculare root

[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of the Polygonum multiflorum plant of the Polygonaceae family.

[Original form] Annual herb, 1-3m tall. The stem is erect, hollow, much branched, and densely hairy. Leaves are alternate; petioles are 3-8cm long; stipules are tubular, membranous and brown at the bottom, herbaceous and covered with long hairs at the top, and often spread out into ring-shaped wings at the top; leaf blades are ovate or broadly ovate, 10-20cm long, 6-12cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, nearly rounded at the base, entire, and sparsely covered with soft hairs on both sides. The raceme is composed of many small flower spikes, terminal or axillary; the bracts are broadly ovate; the flowers are light pink or white; the perianth is deeply lobed into 5 parts, and the lobes are elliptic; the stamens are usually 7, longer than the perianth; the ovary is superior, and the styles are 2. Achenes are nearly round, flat, black and shiny. Flowering period is July-August, and fruiting period is August-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows on roadsides and waterside wetlands.

【Nature and flavor】 Pungent; Cool; Toxic

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies; removes dampness and dredges meridians; promotes tissue regeneration and heals ulcers. It is mainly used for dysentery, enteritis, edema, beriberi, rheumatic pain, traumatic injury, urticaria, sores, carbuncle, swelling and pain or long-term ulceration.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g. For external use: take appropriate amount and decoct in water for washing.
