【English name】 macrocarpa Nucuma

[Alias] Old crow flower vine, big blood vine, blood vine, Heylianglong.

[Source] Medicinal material source: the old stems of the leguminous plant Glehnia littoralis.

[Original form] A large woody vine of Eupatorium longifolium, up to 70m long. The stem is up to 25 cm in diameter, with raised brown lenticels and longitudinal ridges; old stems are often glabrous. Trifoliate leaves, alternate; petiole 8-13cm long, rachis 2-4.5cm long, petiolules 0.5cm long, all covered with appressed pale or rusty hairs; stipules densely hairy, caducous early; terminal leaflets elliptic, ovate-elliptic to obovate, 10-19cm long, 5-10cm wide, slightly concave at the apex, nearly rounded at the base; lateral leaflets asymmetrical, midrib inclined to the upper edge, 10-17cm long, base truncated or slightly cordate; veins raised on both sides. The raceme grows on old stems, 5-23cm long, with 5-12 side branches, each with 2-3 flowers; the pedicels are up to 1cm long, densely covered with dark brown short soft hairs and mixed with reddish brown stiff hairs; the bracts and bracteoles fall off early; the calyx is broadly cup-shaped, densely covered with soft hairs, the calyx tube is 0.8-1.2cm long and 1.2-2cm wide, the calyx teeth are triangular, and the lowest calyx teeth are longer; the corolla is dark red-purple, and the tip of the standard petal is rounded or slightly emarginate; there are 10 males, and they are dissociative. The pods are woody and linear, nearly bead-like, 26-45cm long, 3-5cm wide, up to 1cm thick, densely covered with rusty soft hairs and irregular wrinkles. There are 6-12 seeds, which are black, disc-shaped, and equal in length and width.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in sparse forests in valleys at an altitude of 1000-1200m.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The vine stem is cylindrical, slightly twisted, and has a diameter of 1-3.5cm. The surface is gray-brown to dark brown, with numerous longitudinal grooves. The lenticels are oval, arranged horizontally, and have a diameter of 1-4 mm. They are hard and difficult to break. The resinous secretions of the phloem in the cross section are dark brown, the xylem is yellowish brown, the vessels are hole-like and arranged radially and neatly, the phloem and xylem are arranged alternately in several layers of concentric rings, and the pith is small. It has a faint smell and tastes light and slightly astringent.

[Chemical composition] The vine stems contain lupenone, friedelin, β-sitosterol, △5.22-stigmasten-3β-ol, tetracosanoic acid 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester, pentacosanoic acid 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester and hexa-cosanoic acid 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester. The seeds contain 4.39% L-dopa.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct 15-30g; or soak in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount, decoct in water and use for fumigation or washing; or stir-fry and apply hot.

It has the functions of nourishing blood, activating blood circulation, unblocking menstruation and strengthening bones.
