In Sichuan Province, the rough skin is also scraped off and then dried.

[Habitat distribution] Mainly produced in Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Liaoning, Heilongjiang and Jilin. It is also produced in Shaanxi, Shanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places. Among them, the red peony produced in Northeast China, North China, Northwest China and other places is mainly composed of peony roots, and some are grass peony roots. The red peony produced in the southwest is mainly based on the roots of Sichuan red peony. Among the above-mentioned products, the one produced in Duolun, Inner Mongolia has the best quality and is specifically called "Duolun Red Peony Root".

[Properties] The dried root is cylindrical, with almost equal thickness at both ends, slightly curved, 10 to 36 cm long and about 6 to 19 mm in diameter. The surface is dark brown or dark brown, rough, with transversely raised lenticels and root marks, and coarse and deep longitudinal wrinkles. The outer skin will fall off easily when rubbed by hand, revealing a white or light brown cortex. It is hard and brittle and easily broken. The cross section is flat, pinkish white or yellowish white, the cortex is narrow and pinkish, the central pith is small, the xylem rays are obvious, and sometimes have cracks. It has a slight fragrance and a slightly bitter taste. The best roots are those with thick and long roots, easily peeled off skin, coarse and deep wrinkles, white cross-section, and high powder content.

【Pharmacological action】 ① Antispasmodic effect

[Preparation] Red peony root: Pick out impurities, separate into large and small strips, wash and soak in water for about 70% to 80% thoroughness, remove from the water, dry in the sun, moisten until the moisture inside and outside is evenly distributed, slice, and dry in the sun. Stir-fried red peony root: Put the red peony root slices in a pan and stir-fry until they are slightly flaky, then take them out and let them cool thoroughly.

【Functions and indications】 Removes blood stasis, relieves pain, cools blood and reduces swelling. It is used to treat amenorrhea due to blood stasis, hernia, abdominal pain, flank pain, epistaxis, bloody diarrhea, intestinal bleeding, red eyes, and carbuncles.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 1.5 to 3 qian; or made into pills or powder.

[Additional prescription] ① Treat women with disharmony of qi and blood, upset heart, loss of appetite, lack of strength in the limbs, dizziness, and body pain: 1 liang each of peony bark, white poria, red peony root, angelica dahurica, and licorice, and 3 liang of bupleurum (without the stem). Grind the above six ingredients into powder, take 3 grams each time, add a cup of water, ginger and dates, boil until 70% done, drink while warm, take after meals and before going to bed. In Sichuan, in addition to using Sichuan red peony root, some areas also use the roots of beautiful peony and hairy-leaf peony. Sichuan products are divided into two types: scraped red peony root and original red peony root. Scraped red peony root is the one with the outer skin removed. It is cylindrical, with light purple or flesh-white surface, forward wrinkles, light purple outer surface of the cross section, and light yellow rays inside. The original bark red peony root is the one that has not been peeled. It has a similar shape, but has forked branches in between, and the surface is rough and brown-red or tan.
