[Source] It is the stem of Perilla frutescens, a plant of the Lamiaceae family. When the fruits are ripe in autumn, cut off the old stems, remove the fruits and branches and leaves, and dry them in the sun.

[Habitat distribution] Produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Sichuan, Yunnan and other places.

[Properties] Dry stems, most leaves have fallen off, often with fruit clusters. The stem is square with rounded corners and grooves on the four sides. The surface is yellow-green and easy to break. The cross-section of the stem is yellow-white with white loose pith in the center. The remaining leaves are wrinkled, curled or broken, dark green, lighter on the back, and covered with white hairs on both sides. It has a fragrant aroma and a slightly bitter and spicy taste. The best ones are those with old, dry stems, no roots, leaves or impurities, and a fragrant smell.

【Functions and indications】 Soothing qi, helping digestion, relieving pain, and stabilizing pregnancy. It is used to treat qi stagnation, food stagnation, chest tightness, abdominal pain, and fetal disharmony.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 1.5 to 3 qian.
