[Source] This product is the dried mature fruit of Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad., a plant of the Chenopodiaceae family . When the fruits are ripe in autumn, the plants are harvested, dried, the fruits are beaten and impurities are removed.

[Properties] This product is in the shape of an oblate spherical five-pointed star, with a diameter of 1 to 3 mm. The outer layer is a persistent perianth, with a gray-green or light brown surface, surrounded by 5 membranous winglets, a slightly raised dot-shaped fruit pedicel scar and 5 to 10 radial veins in the center of the back; when the perianth is peeled off, the membranous pericarp can be seen, which is translucent. Seeds are flat-ovate, about 1 mm, black. It has a faint smell and a slightly bitter taste.

【Identification】 (1) The powder of this product is brown in color. The epidermal cells of the perianth are polygonal, the stomata are indefinite, and the thin-walled cells contain clusters of calcium oxalate crystals. The pericarp cells are rectangular or polygonal, with thin walls, wavy curves, and contain numerous small square crystals of calcium oxalate. The seed coat cells are brown, polygonal or square, and mostly wrinkled.
