Folk Tales

This is a beautiful legend about Dada fragrant flowers told by an old Evenk woman.

A long time ago, there was a girl from the Ewenki ethnic group who everyone called Dada. When Dada was young, all her family members died in an epidemic, leaving only Dada herself. Dada survived with the help of his fellow villagers. In order to repay his villagers, Dada went out to travel and study medicine. After studying hard, Dada returned to his hometown and treated the villagers and provided medicine. Everyone liked Dada very much. Suddenly, another epidemic broke out this year. The patients suffered unbearable chest pain when breathing. Dada worked day and night to prepare medicine and treat everyone. Finally, he was overworked and fell ill. It was only then that everyone realized that there were no more herbal medicines available for treating illnesses. There was constant snow and wind on the mountain, and no herbs could be found, so everyone was at a loss. Eventually Dada died of illness. Because Dada often went up the mountain to collect herbs for everyone and she loved the forest very much, everyone buried her in the forest and went back.

After Dada passed away, no one treated the villagers anymore, so everyone decided to leave the village. Before leaving, everyone decided to go see Dada. When everyone arrived at the mountain, they found a kind of small flower they had never seen before growing in the forest. These flowers smelled faintly fragrant. The closer we got to Dada's tomb, the stronger the scent of flowers became. When everyone walked to Dada's tomb, they saw that the tomb was full of small flowers that they saw at the foot of the mountain, and many people felt uncomfortable after smelling the fragrance of the flowers. Everyone then picked some flowers and boiled them into soup to give to the sick villagers. The plague was miraculously cured.

Later, in order to commemorate Dada, people named this small purple flower Dada fragrant flower.
