The brown and yellow pigments of the thin-winged mantis are both biliverdin and its similar substances; biliverdin is found in the skin and blood of the thin-winged mantis. As in higher animals, glycine is the material for synthesizing biliverdin.

[Source] From Compendium of Materia Medica: Mantis, with a tall head and raised arms, a long neck and a big belly, two hands and four legs, is good at climbing and is agile, with whiskers replacing noses. In late autumn, the young plants form pods and stick to the branches, which are silkworms. The chamber is about an inch long and as big as a thumb. It has many chambers inside. Each chamber contains eggs that are like maggots. The eggs come out all at once after the Grain in Ear Festival. Therefore, it is said in "Monthly Ordinances" that mantises are born in midsummer. Praying mantis is not used in ancient prescriptions, but it is used in the method of blowing the nose to stop convulsions in the Puji Fang (note: should be Shengji Zonglu) to treat convulsions. It is probably the same as the silkworm and scorpion that stop convulsions. Silkworms were often used in ancient prescriptions for wind medicine, so praying mantis is used to treat wind, which is the same principle.
