【English Name】 Fructus Nandinae Domesticae

[Other names] Heavenly bamboo, southern bamboo, white bamboo

[Source] It is the fruit of Nandina domestica Thunb., a plant of the Berberidaceae family . The fruits are harvested from November to December or in February and sun-dried.

【Original form】 Evergreen shrub, about 2m high. The stem is erect and the young branches are yellow. The leaves are alternate, clustered at the end of the stem, and are tripinnate. The leaflets are leathery, elliptic-lanceolate, 3 to 7 cm long, gradually pointed at the apex, entire, dark green, and often turn red in winter; there are joints below the leaflets and at the base of the petiole. Inflorescence terminal; multiple whorls of tepals, 3 in each whorl, outer whorl small, inner whorl large; 6 stamens, petal-shaped; ovary superior. The berries are spherical and bright red when ripe. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from September to October.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in moist valleys, under mixed woods on hillsides; or cultivated in gardens. It is produced in various places in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

[Properties] The fruit is spherical, with a diameter of 7 to 9 mm. The surface is yellow-red or reddish-purple, smooth, slightly lustrous, sometimes slightly concave, with a slightly protruding column base at the top and a thin fruit stalk or its broken mark at the base. The fruit skin is brittle and easy to break. There are two seeds, which are slightly hemispherical, concave inside, and yellow-brown. The taste is sour and astringent.

[Chemical composition] Contains isocorydine, protopine, 0-methyldomesticine, hydrocyanic acid, etc.

[Nature and flavor] It is neutral in nature, and tastes sour and sweet.

【Functions and indications】Nourishes the lungs and relieves cough. Used for long-term cough, asthma and whooping cough.
