The highest temperature this week has been hovering around 35℃. In previous years, I might have been drinking iced drinks, sweating profusely, and shouting "It's so hot!". But this year's 35℃ has made me so grateful. Compared with the long-term high temperature of 40℃ a while ago, this temperature is so touchingly comfortable!

However, a recent piece of news made the editor who loves food instantly lose his composure! "Some people lose more than 3,000 hairy crabs every day." It turns out that the high temperature weather of 40℃ that lasted for some time has had a serious impact on hairy crab farmers. Master Fu, a hairy crab farmer with nearly 20 years of breeding experience, looked at the dead crabs floating on the water and complained bitterly. "Every day, an average of three or four hairy crabs per acre are killed by heat. It is calculated that more than 3,000 hairy crabs are lost every day, which has a huge impact on us farmers."

The hairy crabs have to molt five times a year, and each time they molt, the crabs will grow about twice as large. Some time ago, the hairy crabs in the Yangtze River Delta region entered their fourth molt, and it happened to encounter continuous high temperatures. "When they are not molting, the hairy crabs can still tolerate heat better. Once they molt, their bodies become soft and their tolerance decreases. They are very likely to die in extreme weather."

The continued high temperature not only increases the mortality rate of hairy crabs, but also delays or even reduces the molting, which makes the hairy crabs smaller and delays their time to market. Therefore, this year's hairy crabs are unlikely to be on the table for the Mid-Autumn Festival banquet. I hope that the hairy crabs can molt smoothly for the fifth time in the future, so that when the autumn comes and the crabs are plump, we can share the joy of a good harvest and reunion.
