According to his niece Meng Xilin, the famous Hong Kong actor Meng Hai, who won the Best Supporting Actor Award at the 5th Hong Kong Film Awards for his role in "Royal Sister", passed away on the evening of October 9. She also revealed that Meng Hai was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last year. When it was discovered, it was already in the fourth stage of cancer, and there was no improvement after a period of treatment.

To prevent esophageal cancer , stay away from bad eating habits

"In China, about 70% of esophageal cancer patients are already in the middle or late stages when they seek medical treatment and have lost the chance of radical surgical resection. The five-year survival rate is only 15% to 20%." Hao Anlin, director of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Anyang Cancer Hospital in Henan Province, said in an interview with Health Times that there are many causes of esophageal cancer. From the external perspective, patients generally like to eat pickled foods, eat quickly, like to eat while hot, like spicy food, and are addicted to alcohol. From the internal perspective, in addition to genetic factors, oral viral and bacterial infections, and low immune status can easily lead to the occurrence of esophageal cancer.

In April 2020, a study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology mentioned that the damage to healthy life expectancy from esophageal cancer worldwide can be mainly attributed to five known factors, including: smoking (39.0%), drinking (33.8%), high body mass index (BMI) (19.5%), low fruit intake in the diet (19.1%), and chewing tobacco (7.5%).
In our country, in addition to common major factors such as smoking, drinking, and low fruit intake, some unhealthy eating habits are also important reasons for the large number of esophageal cancer patients.

1. Eating too hot

"Eat while it's hot" is a major dietary characteristic of the Chinese people, but overheated food and soup will increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

2. Eating too spicy food

Too spicy food can easily damage the esophageal epithelium, causing epithelial cell degeneration and affecting the nucleic acid metabolism of epithelial cells, leading to mucosal inflammation. If things go on like this for a long time, it may cause esophageal cancer.

3. Eating too roughly

Whole grains are rich in dietary fiber and are good for health, but the premise is to eat them correctly and in moderation. If the food is too hard or not chewed well, the rough food will damage the esophageal mucosa when passing through the esophagus. If such eating habits are maintained for a long time, the process of "mucosal damage → repair → re-damage → re-repair" will be repeated, which may lead to precancerous lesions of esophageal cancer.

4. Love pickled food

The "Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Esophageal Cancer (2018 Edition)" issued by the National Health Commission mentioned that in addition to the high-risk factors of smoking and drinking, the main carcinogenic risk factors in my country's high-incidence areas of esophageal cancer involve carcinogenic nitrosamines and their precursors and certain fungi and their toxins.

Various pickled foods such as salted fish, sausage, sauerkraut, pickled radish, etc. are very common on most people’s tables, but most of these pickled foods contain nitrates and nitrites, which are also important factors causing esophageal cancer.
