[Source] Medicinal material source: The leaves of the Araliaceae plant Glehnia littoralis.

[Original form] Pearl ginseng, perennial herb, about 80cm tall. The rhizome is beaded, hence the name beaded ginseng. The internodes are usually slender like ropes; sometimes some nodes are densely grown in a whip-like shape, with 3-5 palmate compound leaves arranged in a whorl at the top of the stem; the petiole is about 9cm long; there are usually 5 leaflets, smaller on both sides, with petiolules 5-7cm long, long and gradually pointed at the tip, nearly round or wedge-shaped at the base, with fine serrations on the edges, and scattered prickles on the edges and both sides. The umbel is single, sometimes with 1 or more umbels underneath; the flowers are small, light green; the calyx has 5 sharp teeth at the tip; the petals are 5, ovate-triangular, with pointed tips; the stamens are 5, and the filaments are short; the ovary is inferior, and the styles are usually 2 and separate. The fruit is a drupe-like berry, spherical in shape, bright red when ripe. Flowering period is July-August, and fruiting period is August-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in the shade and wet places of bamboo forests on hillsides or in mixed woods at an altitude of 1800-3500m.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and relieves summer heat; promotes the production of body fluids and moistens the throat. Heat damages body fluids; thirst; bone steaming and fatigue fever; wind-fire toothache; dry throat; hoarseness

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 3-12g; or soak in boiling water.
