Ministry of Commerce: China E-commerce Report 2022

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics show that in 2022, the national e-commerce transaction volume reached 43.83 trillion yuan, an increase of 3.5% over the previous year on a comparable basis.

Online retail continues to grow, becoming an important force in expanding domestic demand and expanding consumption. As of December 2022, the scale of online shopping users in my country reached 845 million, an increase of 3.19 million from December 2021, accounting for 79.2% of the total number of netizens. According to the data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2022, the national online retail sales reached 13.79 trillion yuan, an increase of 4.0% over the previous year on a comparable basis. The online retail sales of physical goods reached 11.96 trillion yuan, an increase of 6.2% over the previous year on a comparable basis, accounting for 27.2% of the total retail sales of social consumer goods.

From the perspective of market entities, by the end of 2022, the number of online retail platform stores monitored by business big data reached 24.4807 million, an increase of 11.2% year-on-year, of which the number of physical goods stores reached 13.1934 million, an increase of 17.7% year-on-year. The number of online retail stores for clothing, shoes, hats, textiles, daily necessities, and hardware and electrical materials ranked the top three, accounting for 25.51%, 22.87% and 6.83% of the number of physical goods stores, respectively. From the perspective of commodity categories, the online retail sales of clothing, shoes, hats, textiles, daily necessities, household appliances and audio-visual equipment ranked the top three, accounting for 22.62%, 14.62% and 10.34% of the online retail sales of physical goods, respectively. Chinese and Western medicines, gold and silver jewelry, tobacco and alcohol achieved rapid growth, with year-on-year growth rates exceeding 19.0%.

In terms of product categories, clothing, shoes, hats, textiles, daily necessities, household appliances and audio-visual equipment ranked the top three in online retail sales, accounting for 22.62%, 14.62% and 10.34% of the online retail sales of physical goods respectively. Chinese and Western medicines, gold and silver jewelry, tobacco and alcohol achieved rapid growth, with year-on-year growth rates exceeding 19.0%.

From a regional perspective, online retail sales in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions accounted for 83.92%, 8.87%, 5.73% and 1.48% of the national total, respectively, with year-on-year growth rates of 3.8%, 87%, 3.0% and 13.2%, respectively.
