Colorectal cancer (i.e., large intestine cancer) is one of the major cancers that threaten life and health. The incidence of colorectal cancer in my country is relatively high, and there is a clear trend of younger patients.

A few months ago, Fang Yao (pseudonym), who was in her 40s, had repeated bloody stools. At first, she thought it was hemorrhoids and didn't take it seriously. But later, she found that her bloody stools were getting worse and worse, accompanied by abdominal pain, anemia, and weight loss. She realized that her problem might not be as simple as hemorrhoids, so she rushed to the hospital for treatment.

"When this patient first came to my clinic, he looked very thin and his complexion was very bad," Qing Yanping recalled. After she learned the details of the patient's condition from Fang Yao, she focused her suspicion on colorectal cancer, so she immediately arranged for a colonoscopy and other related examinations for him.

As expected, Fang Yao was diagnosed with colon cancer. Fortunately, it was not too late, and the doctor quickly performed surgery on her and finally helped her completely remove the tumor. Later, Fang Yao also called her parents and siblings to the hospital for a colonoscopy at Qing Yanping's suggestion, and her father in his 70s was also diagnosed with colon cancer.

"The father and daughter told me that they had never had a colonoscopy before, and they didn't expect that the first colonoscopy would be directly related to 'cancer'. Fortunately, their colon cancer has not yet developed to the late stage." Qing Yanping told reporters that Fang Yao and his father have been discharged from the hospital smoothly and are in good condition during follow-up. The father and daughter's experience with cancer has also sounded the alarm for their entire family, and they all said that they will have to do colonoscopy every year in the future.

More vigilance against colorectal cancer

Not long ago, Aunt Fu, who was over 60 years old, came to the Anorectal Surgery Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Ningbo University for treatment due to increased bowel movements, pus, blood and mucus in her stool, and frequent abdominal pain. After a detailed interview and relevant examinations by the doctor, she was diagnosed with colon cancer. The doctor also found that Aunt Fu suffered from familial adenomatous polyposis, with more than 100 polyps densely packed in her large intestine, and her colon cancer was caused by the transformation of polyps. Later, after Aunt Fu completed the surgical treatment, her two sons in their 30s also went to the hospital for colonoscopy because they had similar symptoms to their mother. As a result, both of them were diagnosed with familial adenomatous polyposis. Fortunately, their polyps had not yet become cancerous. "The onset age of familial adenomatous polyposis is early, and the probability of cancer is high. If it is not intervened, it will generally become cancerous around the age of 40. Therefore, for this disease, we will recommend that patients begin follow-up at around the age of 18 or 20. If any suspicious large polyps are found, they need to be removed in time. If the number of polyps is too large, the entire colon may need to be removed." Qing Yanping told reporters that in the end, both of Aunt Fu's sons underwent total colon resection surgery and recovered well after the operation. Symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloody stools were also improved.
