What is the third bathroom?

Over the past year, many cities across the country have stepped up their efforts to build third toilets.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, as of November last year, there were about 52,000 barrier-free toilets in cities across the country, accounting for 31.5% of all public toilets in cities;

There are nearly 10,000 urban public toilets with third toilets, accounting for about 6% of the total number of public toilets in the city.

"Take Chengdu, my city, for example. With the deepening of the toilet revolution, more than 2,000 public toilets have been newly built or renovated in shopping malls, museums, parks, scenic spots, bus stations and other locations. Most of them are equipped with a third toilet, which can basically meet the needs of parents taking their children to the toilet," said Feng Yuan.

These issues need to be resolved

Although the number of third toilets in cities is increasing, there are still problems with their actual application.

According to Feng Yuan's observation, some of the existing third toilets "have unclear signs, some are filled with debris, and some are simply closed for the sake of ease of management."

In her opinion, for the third bathroom to truly play a role, it needs to be improved in three aspects: changing concepts, perfecting details and popularizing knowledge of usage. Only in this way can "the concept of the third bathroom become more deeply rooted in the hearts of the people."
