【English Name】 Root of Axillaryflower Twistedstalk

[Other names] Dianthus root, bamboo forest, Wanhua tip, yellow cattle tail, Baiwei shoots, bamboo trumpet creeper, white dragon beard, black-bone chicken, bamboo leaf Panax notoginseng, oxtail shoots

[Source] Medicinal material source: the roots and rhizomes of the Liliaceae plants Polygonum multiflorum or Long-stamened Bambusa longevity.

[Original form] 1. Baoduo grass, perennial herb, 30-80cm high. The rhizome is fleshy, horizontal, and about 5mm in diameter. The stem is erect, with forked and oblique branches at the top. , leaves are alternate, with short petioles or sessile; leaf blades are thin papery to papery, elliptical, ovate to lanceolate, 4-15cm long, with acuminate or pointed tips, lighter in color below, with nipple-like protrusions on the upper margins of the veins, and with transverse veins. The flowers are bell-shaped, yellow, light yellow, white or greenish yellow, with 1-3 (-5) flowers growing at the top of the branches; the pedicels are 1-2 cm long; the tepals are 6, obovate-lanceolate; the stamens are included and do not extend beyond the tepals, the filaments are about 1.5 cm long, and the anthers are included; the style is 1.5 cm long. The berry is oval or spherical, about 1 cm in diameter, black, and contains 3 dark brown seeds about 5 mm in diameter. The flowering period is from March to June, and the fruiting period is from June to November.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: 1. Growing under forests or in bushes at an altitude of 600-2500m.

[Properties] Identification of properties: the rhizome has branches, obvious segments, early traces of residual stems, and numerous scars on the lower side. The root surface is yellow-white or brown-yellow, with fine longitudinal lines, often curved, 6-10cm long and about 1mm in diameter. It is hard and brittle, easy to break, with a yellow heartwood in the middle of the cross section and light-colored bark. It has a slight odor, a light and slightly sweet taste, and is sticky when chewed.

[Pharmacological action] Cardiotonic effect. Preparations I, II, III, and IV extracted by four different methods were injected subcutaneously at 37.5 g/kg into anesthetized frogs, which had a significant cardiotonic effect. Preparations II, III, and IV were injected intravenously at 4.69 g/kg, 9.38 g/kg, and 14.1 g/kg into anesthetized rabbits, which could enhance heart sounds and slow heart rate. When a large dose of 14.1 g/kg of III was injected intravenously, premature beats, vomiting, and defecation occurred. Within 7-12 days of administration, there was loss of appetite, slow reaction, and mild ataxia.

【Functions and indications】Moistens the lungs and relieves cough; strengthens the glands and helps digestion; relaxes muscles and activates collaterals; clears away heat and detoxifies. Mainly used for lung heat cough; pulmonary tuberculosis hemoptysis; food stagnation and fullness; rheumatic pain; waist and leg pain; fracture; burns and scalds

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash fresh product for application. Make into ointment and apply on it; or grind into powder and mix for application.
