[Source] The bark of the birch plant Coptis chinensis . It can be harvested throughout the year, chopped and sun-dried.

[Original form] Deciduous tree, about 10 meters high. The branches are angular, the bark is rough, the young branches have yellow short soft hairs, the leaves are nearly leathery, obovate, ovate, broadly elliptical or long ovate, 4-16 cm long, 2.5-10 cm wide, the margin is nearly entire or serrulate, the apex is short-pointed or acuminate, the base is rounded or cuneate, and there are 8-16 pairs of lateral veins; the petiole is 1-2.5 cm long. Flowers are unisexual, male flowers are in catkins, numerous and drooping. Infructescence is extremely numerous and arranged in a cone shape; the fruit bract is woody, about 4 mm long, with 5 shallow lobes at the apex; the samaras are about 2 mm long, with membranous wings that are 1/2 the width of the fruit or the same width as the fruit.
