[Other names] Mountain soybean, Dahongpao, Dahehong (Kunming Folk Commonly Used Herbs), Hard-haired Hangzi tip, Mountain skin strip, Ground oil root, White and blue ground flower (Yunnan Chinese Herbal Medicine).

[Source] It is the root of the leguminous plant Croton tiglium . Dig up in autumn, slice and dry.

[Original form] An upright small shrub, about 1 meter tall, with rusty stiff hairs all over the plant. The woody roots are oblong-conical, with few branches, and the bark is dark purple-red when dry. Leaves are alternate, leathery, and 3-compound. The terminal leaflet is ovate, 2.5-7 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, with a rounded, slightly concave apex and a rounded or shallowly cordate base. The lateral leaflets are smaller; the petiole is 5-20 mm long, sometimes nearly sessile and hairy. Inflorescence terminal or axillary; pedicels jointed; calyx bell-shaped, with 5 lanceolate teeth, upper two nearly fused; corolla purple, 1 times longer than calyx, keel shorter than standard petal and nearly equal to wing petal, curved at upper part. The pods are obliquely ovate, about 6 mm long and 4 mm wide, with purple reticular veins.

[Habitat distribution] It grows beside mountain streams, in paddy fields, on grass slopes, in woodlands or in thickets on hillsides. Distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan and other places.

[Properties and flavors] "Commonly used folk herbs in Kunming": "slightly bitter, slightly warm."

【Functions and indications】Promote blood circulation, regulate menstruation, regulate qi, and relieve pain. Treat irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, metrorrhagia, leucorrhea, stomachache, sprain, traumatic bleeding, and burns.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 1 to 4 liang; or soak in wine. For external use: grind into powder or roast fresh roots and apply juice.

[Additional prescription] ① To treat irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, and lumbar sprain: soak rusty nails in wine and drink.
