[Original form] Perennial herb, the whole plant has a strong special smell. The main root is not obvious, with many fibrous roots, brown-yellow. The stem is erect, cylindrical, 50 to 80 cm high, purple-red, smooth and hairless, slightly lignified at the base, and the young branches are gray-green and often hollow. Leaves are alternate, 2- or 3-pinnate; leaflets are elliptical or obovate, unequal in size, 1-2.5 cm long, 0.7-1.5 cm wide, obtuse or slightly concave at the apex, entire, base cuneate, dark green above, gray-green beneath, papery, bare, with small transparent glandular dots. The inflorescence is terminal or terminal on the side branches, with leaflets at the base of the branches; the calyx is 4-lobed, 1-1.5 mm long, obtuse or slightly rounded at the apex, fused below the middle, with small glandular dots; the petals are 4, white, separate, oblong or obovate-oblong, obtuse at the apex, with transparent small glandular dots; the stamens are 8, the filaments are filiform, of varying lengths and spaced apart from each other, the anthers are oblong, yellow, longitudinally fissured, and 2-chambered; the ovary is 1, the carpels are 4, separated at the base, with an ovary stalk, which is elongated when the fruit is ripe, the styles are 4, united at the top, separated at the base, and the stigma is slightly swollen. Capsule with small protruding glandular dots on the surface. Seeds are several, kidney-shaped, dark brown. Flowering period is from April to October. Fruiting period is from June to November.

[Habitat distribution] Grown on hillsides, under forests and in bushes. Distributed in Southwest China, South China, East China to Taiwan and other places.

[Chemical composition] The whole plant of Scutellaria baicalensis contains 0.25% aromatic oil, and the stems and leaves contain 0.3% oil. The above-ground parts contain rutin, bergamot lactone and dactyline.
