NRF: 2022 U.S. Retailer Rankings

According to a recent list released by the National Retail Federation (NRF), Walmart remains the largest retailer in the United States, with domestic sales of approximately $500 billion in 2022. This is an increase of 7.8% from 2021 and an increase of approximately 50% from sales a decade ago.

The second place is of course Amazon. Last year, the e-commerce giant's retail sales in the United States exceeded $232 billion, a year-on-year increase of 6.7%. Ten years ago, Amazon was not even in the top 10, which shows how fast e-commerce has developed.

Rounding out the top five U.S. retailers in 2022 are Costco ($164.15 billion), Kroger ($147.62 billion), and Home Depot ($145.94 billion). The next three companies all saw sales decline, although they all had more than $100 billion in U.S. sales last year: Target ($107.59 billion); CVS ($106.18 billion); and Walgreens ($103.91 billion).

According to another list released by the National Retail Federation, among the eight companies, Amazon's global sales are the least dependent on the United States. Last year, sales in the United States accounted for 68% of Amazon's global sales ($343.33 billion); 83% of Walmart's global sales ($600.94 billion) came from the United States. At the same time, Kroger, Target and CVS's global sales all come from the United States.

Other highlights on the list of top retailers in the U.S.:

Signet Jewelries rose 10 places to rank 56th.

In contrast, Dell Technologies performed poorly, with sales falling 20.3% year-over-year.

Troubled Bed Bath & Beyond, which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, ranked No. 64 last year but fell out of the top 100 entirely this year.

Big box stores like Walmart, Costco and Target are continuing to grow, while drugstores like CVS and Walgreens are struggling.

There is a clear upward trend in foreign investment in the United States: for example, Mexico’s Grupo Commercial Chedraui, which ranks 57th in sales in the United States, saw its sales in the United States increase by 137.3%, with the majority of its sales in 2022 (59%) coming from the United States.

Camping and outdoor retailers as a group saw growth in 2022, while the leisure category as a whole had a "mixed" performance.
