【English Name】 Dahurian Pulsatilla Root

[Source] It is the Ranunculaceae plant Pulsatill dahurica (Fisch.) Spreng. Root . Dig up in summer and autumn, remove the mud and sand, and dry.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 10 to 45 cm tall. There are many basal leaves, with a wider base of petiole. The leaf blade is oblong-ovate and pinnately divided. The top lobe is petiolate, about 2 cm long, broadly ovate, 3 deeply lobed, and the lobes are further 2-3 lobed to shallowly lobed. The lateral lobes are usually sessile, unequally 2 deeply lobed, and the lobes are further 2-3 lobed to shallowly lobed; the final lobe is narrowly oblong to linear-lanceolate, entire or sparsely serrate, the leaf surface is glabrous, and the back is sparsely hairy. The scape is curved or drooping at the top when flowering, and is sparsely covered with white soft hairs; the involucral leaves are deeply palmately lobed, the lobes are linear to linear-lanceolate, undivided, 2-3 shallowly lobed or pinnately divided, covered with long soft hairs on the outside, and glabrous on the inside; the flowers are blue-purple, usually not spreading; there are 6 sepals, about 2 cm long, 0.5-1 cm wide, with the tip not recurved, densely covered with long soft hairs on the outside, and glabrous on the inside. Achenes are oblong, with slender persistent styles, up to 5.5 cm long, slightly curved, densely covered with white feathers, which become sparse near the top. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from June to July.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in gravel ground and forest open spaces. Mainly produced in Northeast China.

[Properties] The roots are cylindrical, twisted, 8 to 25 cm long and 0.5 to 2 cm in diameter. The surface is yellow-brown with longitudinal wrinkles, the skin is easy to fall off, and some have reticular cracks. The root head is slightly swollen and has white hairs, and the remains of sheath-like petioles are visible. It is hard and brittle, with yellowish-white bark and light yellow wood. Slight smell, slightly bitter taste.
