[Source] The leaves of Mahonia fortunei (Lindl.) Fedde, a plant of the Berberidaceae family . It can be harvested throughout the year and sun-dried.

【Original form】 Evergreen shrub, up to 2m tall. The roots and stems are yellow in cross section, and the leaves are bitter. The monopinnate compound leaves are alternate, 15-30 cm long; the leaflets are 3-9, leathery, lanceolate, 5-12 cm long, 1-2.5 cm wide, the lateral leaflets are equal in length, the terminal leaflet is the largest, all sessile, with acute or acuminate tips, narrow cuneate bases, and 6-13 thorn-like sharp teeth on the margins; the stipules are small and in appearance. The raceme is erect, in 4 to 8 groups; there are 9 sepals in 3 whorls; the petals are yellow, 6 in 2 whorls; the pedicel is 1 to 4 mm long. The berries are round or oblong, 4 to 6 mm long, blue-black with white powder. Flowering period is from July to October.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in valleys and underforest wetlands. Distributed in Jiangsu, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Guangdong and Guangxi.

[Properties] Pinnate compound leaves, 5 to 9 leaflets, most of which are wrinkled, leathery, lanceolate, with 5 to 10 thorns on each side. The petiole is 10 to 20 cm long, about 2 mm in diameter, and has grooves on it. It is used in the same way as broad-leaved Mahonia.

[Chemical composition] Contains berberine, palmatine, jatrorrhizine and magnoflorine.

[Functions and indications] Same as broad-leaved Mahonia leaf.

[Additional prescription] The rhizomes and fruits are also used as medicine.
