[Source] It is the seeds of Iris serrata , a plant of the Iridaceae family. When the fruits are ripe in August and September, the clusters are cut off, dried in the sun, the seeds are removed, impurities are removed, and then dried in the sun again.

[Original form] Iris (Tang Materia Medica), also known as: Dry Cattail (Book of Rites), Jucao, Pig Head, Sanjian (Benjing), Li (Shuowen), Maxie (Zheng Xuan's note on Book of Rites), Ma Lian (Explanation of Herbs), Licao (Compendium of Materia Medica).

[Habitat distribution] Grown in sunny mountains and fields. It is distributed in most parts of our country. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Liaoning, Hebei, Beijing and other places.

[Properties] The dried and hot seeds are flat or irregularly oval polyhedrons, about 5 mm long and 3 to 4 mm wide. The surface is reddish brown to dark brown, with yellowish brown or light yellow at the bottom. Hilum, with a slightly raised chalazion at the top. Hard texture. The endosperm of the cut surface is thick, grayish white, and horny; the embryo is located at one end of the hilum, white, small and curved. The smell is faint and the taste is bland. The best ones are reddish brown, full and pure.

[Processing] Pick out impurities, sieve out ash, mash or stir-fry over high heat until it puffs up.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet, neutral.

【Meridian】 ① "Depei Materia Medica": "enters the blood of the Yangming meridian."

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, promotes dampness, stops bleeding and detoxifies. Treat jaundice, diarrhea, hematemesis, epistaxis, metrorrhagia, leucorrhea, throat congestion, and carbuncle.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 1 to 3 qian; or made into pills or powder. For external use: mash and apply.

【Note】 ① "Bie Lu": "Taking too much will cause diarrhea."

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of acute icteric infectious hepatitis: 3 grams of Iris seeds. Decoction in water. (Handbook of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Xinjiang)

【Clinical application】 ①Treatment of bone tuberculosis

[Note] In Xinjiang, the seeds of the same genus plant, Iris odorata , are still used as medicine on an equal basis with Iris odorata seeds.
