[Source] It is the rhizome and root of the Liliaceae plant. Harvested in summer and autumn.

[Original form] Wanshou bamboo, also known as: Baoduo grass. Perennial herb. The rhizome is long, fat and white, sometimes creeping. The stem is erect, 30 to 60 cm high. Slightly sloping at the top. The leaves are oblong to broadly lanceolate, gradually pointed at the apex, rounded or slightly pointed at the base, 4 to 8 cm long and 1.3 to 4.7 cm wide; the petiole is very short. Umbel; 1 to 3 flowers, terminal, drooping, pedicel 1.5 to 3 cm long; flowers white, green on top; 6 perianths, acute at apex, sometimes convex, gradually narrow at base, with short hairs on the edge and inner surface of the lower half; 6 stamens, filaments glabrous, up to 2 cm long, incarnation broad linear; 1 pistil, ovary elliptical, 3-chambered, style glabrous, 3-lobed at the top. The berries are black, spherical, and about 6 mm in diameter. Flowering period is March.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in the shade under forests in low mountain areas. Distributed in Guizhou, Sichuan and other places.

[Properties] Dry rhizome, branched, with residual stem marks, relatively sparse fibrous roots, brown in appearance, curved, about 15 to 30 cm long and about 3 mm in diameter. It is hard and brittle, easy to break, with a smooth cross section, a yellow and flexible core in the middle, and light yellow-white surroundings. No smell, light and sticky taste.

[Pharmacological action] Preparations extracted by four different methods (Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ) had a significant cardiotonic effect when injected subcutaneously into anesthetized frogs (37.5 g/kg); intravenous injection of Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ into anesthetized rabbits (4.69 g and 9.38 g/kg) also had the same effect; intravenous injection of Ⅲ and Ⅳ into non-anesthetized dogs (4.69 g, 9.38 g and 14.1 g/kg) could significantly enhance heart sounds and slow heart rate more significantly than other cardiac glycosides; when a large amount of Ⅲ (14.1 g/kg) was injected, premature beats, vomiting and defecation occurred, and loss of appetite, slow reaction and mild ataxia occurred within 7-12 days of administration.

【Functions and indications】Moistens the lungs and relieves cough, strengthens the spleen and eliminates accumulation. It is used to treat cough and asthma due to deficiency, blood in sputum, bleeding in the intestines, and bloating due to food accumulation.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 0.5 to 1 liang. For external use: mash and apply.
