comScore: U.S. e-commerce retail sales increased 10% year-on-year in the 2013 holiday shopping season

According to data released by comScore, an American Internet traffic monitoring agency, the total US e-commerce retail sales in the holiday shopping season from November to December 2013 set a new record, reaching US$46.5 billion, up 10% year-on-year. Among them, "Cyber Monday" has been the most popular online consumption day for four consecutive years.

Affected by the compressed shopping season and weak consumption in the last week, the total online retail sales in 2013 and its double-digit year-on-year growth rate were far from the predicted value of US$48.1 billion and 14% year-on-year growth rate. Nevertheless, considering the special holiday shopping season this year, the online retail sales achieved double-digit year-on-year growth and far exceeded the physical retail industry, and the overall performance was quite good.

Since there are only three weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, many consumers this year do not have as much time to shop online as in the past. Therefore, the online retail sales are lower than expected, which is ultimately due to the compression of the shopping season. To offset the impact of the shortened time, more people choose to shop online on weekends. But even so, the number of working days in the shopping season has been greatly reduced, which in the end has seriously hindered the growth of online retail sales. In addition, the lack of economic ability of consumers has forced retailers to offer large-scale discounts to stimulate consumption, which is also a factor leading to the reduction in total retail sales.

Clothing and accessories are the best-selling products in the holiday shopping season, with retail sales increasing by more than 13% year-on-year, slightly better than consumer electronics, mainly smartphones. Computer hardware (mainly tablets) ranked third with a difference of only 1% in total retail sales. In addition, toys and hobby products, game consoles and accessories ranked fourth and fifth respectively.

Top 10 Online Shopping Hotspots During the Japanese holiday shopping season, online sales exceeded $1 billion on 10 days. Among them, Cyber Monday (December 2) ranked first again with $1.735 billion in sales. This is the fourth consecutive year that Cyber Monday has topped the sales rankings. On December 3 (Tuesday), online sales were $1.41 billion, ranking second. Next was Green Monday (December 9), with $1.401 billion in sales. If mobile shopping is also included, Cyber Monday's total sales reached $2 billion. This is the first time in the history of online shopping that a single-day total of $2 billion has reached this level.
