[Source] It is the root and rhizome of Clematis hexapetala Pall., a plant of the Ranunculaceae family . Dig it up in autumn, remove the above-ground parts and soil and dry it in the sun.

[Original morphology] Erect herbs, 30-100 cm tall, with longitudinal ridges and sparsely covered with short hairs. Pinnate compound leaves are opposite, with the middle and lower leaflets often pinnately divided, and the leaflets or lobes are leathery, usually linear. Cymes are axillary or terminal, usually with 3 flowers, bracts linear-lanceolate, pedicels with extended pubescence; sepals 6, white, with white pubescence on the outside, no petals. Achenes obovate, flat, with closely attached soft hairs, feathery style up to 2 cm long. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from July to October.

[Habitat distribution] Growing on the edge of mountain forests or on grass slopes. Mainly produced in Northeast China and Shandong.

[Properties] The rhizome is irregularly cylindrical, horizontally long, with a grayish yellow to brown surface, raised nodes, and numerous slender roots on both sides and below. The root is cylindrical, about 5 to 8 cm long and 1 to 2 cm in diameter. The surface is brown, hard and brittle, easy to break, the wood is light yellow, the heartwood is small, the smell is slight, and the taste is slightly bitter.
