[Source] The roots and leaves of the leguminous plant Sesbania sesbania . Harvested in summer and used fresh.

[Original form] Semi-shrub, up to 2 to 3 meters high. The stem is erect, branched, nearly bald or covered with a few scattered, closely attached hairs; the branches and leaf axes are smooth or sometimes have small bumps. The leaves are even-pinnate compound leaves, 15 to 30 cm long; there are 20 to 30 pairs of leaflets, which are linear-rectangular, 8 to 20 mm long, with obtuse tips and small sharp tips. The racemes are axillary, 3 to 10 cm long, sparse, with 3 to 6 flowers; the calyx is green, bare, 4 to 5 mm long, with short and pointed teeth; the petals are light yellow, about 1 cm long, and the standard petal has purple spots; there are 2 bundles of stamens; the ovary is linear, and the style is incurved. The pods are cylindrical and linear, straight or curved, 15 to 20 cm long, about 3 mm wide, with a pointed beak, and contain 25 to 30 seeds. Flowering period is September.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in mountains and plains. Distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong and other places.

【Chemical composition】 The xylem contains 0.02% nitrogen, 0.71% ash, 19.41% pentosan, 56.21% cellulose and 20.40% lignin. The bast fiber contains 0.27% nitrogen, 4.03% ash, 13.69% pentosan, 52.48% cellulose and 13.10% lignin.

[Properties and flavors] "Fujian Folk Herbs": "sweet, slightly bitter, neutral."

[Meridian] "Quanzhou Materia Medica"): "Enters the heart, kidney, and bladder meridians."

【Function and indications】Root: Treats diarrhea and leucorrhea in women. Leaves: Treat hematuria and snake bites.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 0.5-2 liang; or mash into juice. For external use: mash and apply.

[Additional prescription] ① Treating men's lower abdominal distension and women's leucorrhea: 1 liang of fresh root of Scolopendra subspinipes, 14 ginkgo seeds, and 1 liang of rock sugar. Decoction in water.
