Leaves are opposite; petiole less than 5mm long, with a pair of stipule-like hard thorns at the base; leaf blade oblong, 5-12cm long, 2-3cm wide, often truncated at the tip, with thorn-like convex tip, pinnately divided to deeply pinnately divided, lobes usually triangular, with thorns. The spike inflorescence is terminal; the bracts are broadly ovate to nearly round, about 6mm long, usually falling off before flowering; there are no bracteoles; the calyx lobes are 4, the outer pair of sepals are larger, broadly ovate, about 800mm long, and the inner pair of sepals are smaller; the corolla is about 2cm long, the corolla tube is about 7mm long, the crown brim is single-lipped, the upper lip is extremely degenerate and often not obvious, the lower lip is broad, stretched, and 3 shallowly lobed; the stamens are 4, attached to the throat, the filaments are thick, about 8mm long, the anthers are close together, 1-chambered, and bearded; the ovary has 2 ovules in each chamber, the style is short, and the stigma is 2-lobed. The capsule is oblong, about 1.8 cm long and shiny. There are 2 seeds, which are nearly round, flattened on both sides, and have a loose seed coat. Flowering period is October.
