[Source] Medicinal material source: the root and rhizome of Valeriana officinalis of the Valeriana family.

[Original form] Valerian is a perennial herb, 20-80cm tall. The rhizome has a thin stigma and obvious nodes: there are slender creeping branches, and each node has a pair of heart-shaped long-petiolated leaves. Basal leaves with long petioles, 5-10cm long; leaves are the same shape as creeping leaves, 1-3cm long, with rounded and obtuse apex, flat-truncate cordate base, wavy crenate or entire margin, sometimes 3-lobed. Stem leaves are opposite; petiole is short; ovate, 2-4cm long, 1-2cm wide, pinnately divided, with 3-7 lobes, sparse; apex is split into ovate or lanceolate, obtuse or acuminate, with sparse serrations on the margin, lateral lobes are the same shape as the top lobe but gradually become smaller. Inflorescence is corymbose, terminal or sometimes from the upper leaf axils; bracts and bracteoles are linear to linear-lanceolate; flowers are small, light pink; calyx is involute; corolla is 2-3mm long, thinly tubular at the base, swollen at the top, and 5-lobed; stamens are 3; ovary is inferior and elongated. Achenes are linear-ovate, about 3mm long, with three thin and sparse ridges on the back and more than 10 feathery pappus at the tip. The flowering period is from April to June, and the fruiting period is from May to August.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in forest edges, grasslands, stream sides and other grasslands with good water and humidity conditions at an altitude of 1000-3600m.
