[Original form] Small five-colored sedge, upright or ascending herb, 20-30cm high. Stems usually purple, quadrangular, puberulent. Leaves are opposite; petioles are 1-5cm long and pubescent; leaf blades vary greatly in shape, size and color, usually oval, 4-12.5cm long, 2.5-9cm wide, with apex convex, base broadly cuneate or rounded, margins crenate-serrated, pubescent on both sides, and reddish-brown glandular dots underneath. The cymes are many-flowered, arranged in simple or branched racemes, 5-25cm long, with pedicels and axis pubescent; bracts are broadly ovate, 2-3mm long, with apex tail-pointed, covered with soft hairs and glandular dots on the outside, falling off; calyx is bell-shaped, 2-3mm long, covered with short stiff hairs and glandular dots on the outside, increasing in size to 7mm when fruiting, upper lip 3-lobed, middle lobe shorter than lower lip, broadly ovate, lateral lobes short, about half the size of middle lobe, lower lip rectangular, with 2 teeth at the apex; all of them are of this grade of hairs; corolla purple or blue, 8-13mm long, upper lip short, erect, 4-lobed, lower lip long, boat-shaped; stamens 4, included, filaments connate at the lower part into a sheath-like shape, surrounding the base of the style; style longer than stamens, extending, stigma 2-lobed; disk swollen in front. The nutlets are broadly oval, brown and shiny. The flowering period is July, and the fruiting period is August-September.
