[Source] This product is the dried inflorescence of Inula japonica Thunb. or Inula britannica L., which belong to the Asteraceae family . Harvest the flowers when they bloom in summer and autumn, remove impurities, and dry them in the shade or in the sun.

[Properties] This product is oblate or spherical, with a diameter of 1 to 2 cm. The involucre is composed of many bracts, which are arranged in a shingle-like manner. The bracts are lanceolate or strip-shaped, gray-yellow, and 4-11mm long. The pedicels sometimes remain at the base of the involucre, and the surface of the bracts and pedicels are covered with white hairs. There is a row of ligulate flowers, which are yellow, about 1cm long, mostly curled, often falling off, and 3-toothed at the apex; there are many tubular flowers, brown-yellow, about 5mm long, and 5-toothed at the apex; there are many white pappus at the top of the ovary, which are 5-6mm long. Some have small oval achenes. Lightweight and easy to break. It has a faint smell and a slightly bitter taste.

【Identification】 (1) Surface appearance of this product: Bracts have 1-8 cells of non-glandular hairs, multicellular ones have swollen bases and elongated apical cells; inner bracts have 2-3 cells of non-glandular hairs growing side by side. The pappus are multi-row non-glandular hairs, with marginal cells protruding slightly outward. Ovary epidermal cells contain calcium oxalate columnar crystals, up to 48 μm long and 2-5 μm in diameter; ovary non-glandular hairs are in 2 rows, 1 row is single-celled, the other row is usually 2-celled, 90-220 μm long. Bracts and corolla glandular hairs are club-shaped, head multicellular, mostly arranged in 2 rows, surrounded by a cuticle, stalk multicellular, 2 rows. Pollen grains are spherical, with a diameter of 22 to 33 μm, and have thorns on the outer wall, about 3 μm long, with 3 germination pores.
