[Source] Medicinal material source: The tuber of Dioscorea zingiberensis, a plant of the Dioscoreaceae family.

[Original form] Dioscorea zingiberensis is a twining vine. The tuber is cylindrical, grows vertically, and has a sticky cross-section when fresh. Stem right-handed, hairy. Simple leaves are alternate; petiole is shorter than leaf blade; leaf blade is ovate-cordate, apex is caudate, smooth or pubescent above, densely covered with white pubescent or almost glabrous below. Flowers are dioecious. The male flowers are brown-red, often 4-8 flowers gathered in cymes, and several cymes are spaced at regular intervals to form spikes about 10 cm long; the corolla has brown-red spots and is hairy on the outside; there are 6 stamens attached to the perianth tube; the anthers are introverted and longer than the filaments. Female inflorescence spike-shaped, about 5 cm long. The capsule is recurved, usually 2-6 pieces are clustered on a short fruit axis, densely covered with soft hairs, sometimes nearly glabrous; the capsule wings are thin, about 20mm long and 4-6mm wide; the seeds are flat, born at the base of each room of the fruit, with axe-shaped broad wings on the top. The flowering period is July-August, and the fruiting period is September-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in valleys, hillside thickets or forest edge wetlands at an altitude of 700-3200m.
