[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of Tianmu Dihuang of the Scrophulariaceae family.

[Original form] Tianmu Dihuang is a perennial herb, 30-60cm tall. The whole body is covered with multicellular long hairs. The rhizome is fleshy and yellowish brown. Stem solitary or branched at base. The basal leaves are arranged in a rosette shape, elliptical, 6-12cm long, 3-6cm wide, papery, sparsely covered with white soft hairs on both sides, with irregular round teeth or coarse serrations on the edges, obtuse or pointed tips, cuneate bases, gradually shrinking into winged petioles 2-7cm long; the stem leaves are similar in appearance to the basal leaves, gradually becoming smaller upwards. Flowers solitary; pedicel 1-4cm long, curved and ascending, with calyx covered with long soft hairs and glandular hairs; calyx teeth 5, lanceolate, slightly pointed at the tip, 2 slightly longer at the back; corolla purple-red, 5-7cm long, covered with long soft hairs, upper lip lobes oblong, slightly pointed at the tip, lower lip lobes oblong, middle lobe more soft hairs, upper lip lobes oblong, slightly pointed at the tip; lower lip lobes oblong, middle lobe larger; stamens rear one pair slightly shorter, filament base covered with short glandular hairs, front one pair slightly longer, filaments glabrous; ventricle oblong, base forked into a straight line; style tip enlarged, pointed or obtuse tip. Capsule ovate, 0.4 cm long, with persistent calyx and style. Seeds numerous, ovate, reticulate. The flowering period is April-May, and the fruiting period is May-June.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows on hillsides and in roadside grass.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet; bitter; cold

【Functions and indications】 Clears heat and cools blood; nourishes yin and produces body fluid. It is mainly used for febrile diseases, high fever, irritability, vomiting blood, nosebleed, dry mouth, sore throat, otitis media, and burns.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 12-30g. For external use: take appropriate amount, mash it into powder; or mash the juice and drop it into the ear.
