[Original form] Twisted lemongrass is a perennial herb. It has fine and tough fibrous roots. The culm is erect, 50-120cm high, with tiny white hairs on the nodes. The leaf sheaths are glabrous, with the base sheaths often broken and curled, showing a brown-red color; the leaves are linear, 30-50cm long and 4-6mm wide. The inflorescences extend in pairs from the boat-shaped spathe, forming a large and dense pseudopanicle, 25-35cm long. The racemes are 8-18mm long, reddish brown or purple, and the spathes are 12-15mm long. The spikelets are borne in pairs, with 1-2 pairs of the same sex (both male or neutral) at the base, both glabrous, and the spikelets at the upper nodes are pairs of opposite sex (two sexes, sessile spikelets and male and neutral stalked spikelets); the sessile spikelets are oblong-acicular, 3.5-5mm long, with fine hairs at the base, with 1 knee-shaped awn, 10-15mm long, and 2 glumes of almost equal length; the first lemma is membranous, oblong, the second lemma is narrow, 2-lobed, with awns extending from the lobes, and the palea is small or absent; the stalked spikelets are 3.5-5mm, awnless, and the spikelet stalk is usually covered with white soft hairs 0.5-1mm long. Flowering and fruiting period is August to October.
