[Pharmacological action] The seed kernel contains two toxic saponins with similar effects. Equally toxic. For mammals, it mainly causes hemolysis; 0.0005-0.002 g/kg can cause a sharp drop in blood pressure, an increase in intestinal volume, and a slight increase in kidney volume, indicating visceral vascular dilation, inhibition of small intestinal and uterine smooth muscles, and death from respiratory failure. It has a killing effect on amoeba, is less toxic to Paramecium, has no antibacterial effect, and cannot harm mosquito larvae, but can poison fish.
