Are centipedes poisonous?

Are centipedes poisonous?

No matter what kind of centipede it is, it is poisonous. Even the most common centipede in our home has a strong toxin. If you are bitten by it accidentally, it may cause poisoning. Therefore, when you are bitten by a centipede, you must deal with it immediately. You can use a pacifier to suck the toxin out of your body, but this cannot completely eliminate the toxin. You still need to go to the hospital for treatment.

Centipede belongs to the class Myriapoda. The first pair of legs are hooked and sharp. There is a poison gland opening at the tip of the hook, generally called palatine teeth, tooth claws or poison limbs, which can excrete venom. After being bitten by a centipede, its venom glands secrete a large amount of venom, which is injected into the subcutaneous tissue of the bitten person through the venom gland opening of the palatine teeth and causes poisoning.

Clinical manifestations

The bite of a small centipede will only cause local redness, swelling and pain, while the bite of a large tropical centipede can cause lymphangitis and tissue necrosis, and sometimes purpura of the entire limb. Some may experience systemic symptoms such as headache, fever, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and even slurred speech, convulsions, and coma.

Emergency treatment

After being bitten by a centipede, wash the wound immediately with soapy water, apply cold wet compresses to the wound locally, or apply mashed Houttuynia cordata or dandelion externally. If you have systemic symptoms, go to the hospital immediately.

Scorpions belong to the order Arachnids. When a scorpion stings a person, the venom secreted by its venom glands enters the human body, quickly causing a series of poisoning reactions.

Emergency treatment

Tie a cloth band 2 to 3 cm above the upper end of the injured limb, and relax it for 1 to 2 minutes every 15 minutes. Apply ice compresses around the wound, cut the skin of the injured area, suck out the venom with a suction device or cupping, and use potassium permanganate solution or lime water to rinse the wound. Those with severe symptoms should go to the hospital for treatment.

The above article tells you in detail whether centipedes are poisonous. After being bitten by a centipede, the affected area will have some redness and swelling, and there will be pain. This is a very common symptom, but if not treated in time, it can also lead to very serious symptoms such as deep coma or whole body convulsions.
