[Source] It is the tuberous root of Liriope platyphylla Wang et Tang, a plant of the Liliaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb. The plant grows in clusters; the roots are branched and often partially swollen into spindle-shaped or rectangular tubers, which can be up to 3.5 cm long and about 7 to 8 mm in diameter. The leaves are clustered, leathery, 20 to 65 cm long, 1 to 3.5 cm wide, and have 9 to 11 veins. The peduncle is usually longer than the leaves, 35 to 100 cm long; the raceme is 25 to 40 cm long, with many flowers, 3 to 8 clustered in the axils of bracts; the bracts are small and bristle-like; the tepals are oblong or oblong-lanceolate, about 3.5 mm long, and purple; the filaments are about 1.5 mm long; the anthers are 1.5 to 2 mm long; the ovary is nearly spherical, the style is about 2 mm long, and the stigma is three-lobed. The seeds are spherical, green at first, and turn black and purple when mature. The flowering period is from July to August, and the fruiting period is from September to October.

[Habitat distribution] Grown under mountain forests or in moist places in valleys. Mainly produced in East China and Central China.

[Properties] The tuber is rectangular with blunt ends, 1 to 3 cm long and 6 to 12 mm in diameter. The surface is brown, with wide wrinkles and is uneven. It is hard, with a yellowish-brown cross section, horny, a distinct central column, and not easy to break. Slight odor, slightly sweet taste.

[Chemical composition] Contains a variety of broad-leaved ophiopogon saponins (broad-leaved ophiopogon saponins A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H) whose aglycones are ruscogenin and diosgenin.

[Functions and indications] Same as Ophiopogon japonicus.
