[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of Aconitum scapularis or Aconitum polyphylla of the Ranunculaceae family.

[Original form] 1. Aconitum scapularis, perennial herb, 35-67cm tall. The root is nearly cylindrical, about 10 cm long and 0.8 cm in diameter. The stem is erect and slightly densely covered with recurved short light yellow tails. Leaves alternate; basal leaves 3-4, with long petioles, petioles 13-40cm long, sheathed at base; leaf blades reniform pentagonal, 5.5-11cm long, 8.5-22cm wide, sheathed at base; leaf blades reniform pentagonal, 5.5-11cm long, 8.5-22cm wide, base cordate, 3-lobed slightly beyond the middle, central lobe oblique fan-shaped, acute, rarely acuminate, inconspicuously 3 shallowly lobed, with coarse teeth on margin, lateral lobes inverted trapezoidal rhombus, acute, rarely acuminate, inconspicuously 3 shallowly lobed, with coarse teeth on margin, lateral lobes oblique fan-shaped, unequally 2 shallowly lobed, with short procumbent hairs on both sides; stem leaves small, 2-4, concentrated near base, sometimes absent, petiole about 5cm long, leaf blade about 2cm long, or completely degenerate, petiole sheath-shaped. Inflorescence 15-40 flowers in raceme; bracts borne at base of pedicels. Flowers are bisexual and bilaterally symmetrical; sepals 5, petal-shaped, blue-purple, sparsely covered with spreading fine rough hairs on the outside, upper sepal cylindrical, 1.3-1.8cm high, outer edge nearly straight, forming a sharp beak with the lower edge that spreads downward; petals 2, spur 2-3 times longer than petal, boxy, sparsely covered with short hairs or glabrous; stamens few, glabrous; carpels 3, sparsely covered with long hairs. Follicles, 0.8-1.3cm long. Seeds numerous, obovate, about 1.5mm long, densely covered with narrow transverse wings. The flowering period is August-September, and the fruiting period is September-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: 1. Grown in mountain valleys or shady and moist places in forests at an altitude of 1200-2000m.

[Properties] Identification of properties: the roots are irregular cylindrical, mostly curved, sometimes branched, 5-10cm long and 0.5-1cm in diameter. The surface is black-brown with numerous longitudinal and transverse wrinkles and root marks. It is hard, not easy to break, and has an uneven cross section. It has a faint smell, tastes spicy, bitter and slightly numb.

[Chemical composition] The root of Aconitum scapularis contains scaconine, scaconitine and N-deacetylscacoitine.

【Properties and flavors】 Spicy; bitter; warm; slightly toxic

【Functions and indications】Promote blood circulation and regulate menstruation; disperse blood stasis and relieve pain. Mainly used for irregular menstruation, traumatic injury, fracture pain, rheumatic joint pain, stomachache, and nameless swelling

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g; or soaked in wine. For external use: apply appropriate amount by grinding.

[Additional prescription] ① To treat irregular menstruation: 3 grams each of Huoxue Lian and Ganxue Wang. Take with wine soak. (Guizhou Folk Medicine)② Treat injuries from falls: 5 qian each of Huoxue Lian, Jianxue Fei, and Chi Shao. Add half water and half wine and boil it. (Guizhou Folk Medicine)

[Various scholars’ comments] Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica (10:692, 1965): Treats injuries from falls; resolves phlegm, and relieves cough and asthma. Use externally to treat unknown swellings and pus.
