[Properties] This product is cylindrical or semi-cylindrical, 5 to 10 cm long and 0.5 to 5 cm in diameter. The surface is yellow-brown to gray-brown, with obvious wrinkles, longitudinal grooves and lateral root marks. It is hard and not easy to break. The cross section is gray-brown to dark brown, the surrounding area is gray-yellow or light brown-yellow, the cambium ring is brown, with radial texture and scattered brown dot-like oil chambers. It has a unique aroma and a slightly bitter taste.

【Identification】 (1) The powder of this product is yellow-green in color. Inulin is common, and radial texture appears on the surface. Wood fibers are mostly bundled, long and spindle-shaped, with a diameter of 16 to 24 μm, and the pore openings are in the shape of transverse cracks, crosses or herringbone shapes. Reticular ducts are common, and there are also bordered pit ducts with a diameter of 30 to 90 μm. Fragments of the oil chamber are sometimes visible, containing yellow or brown secretions.

[Preparation] Costus root : remove impurities, wash, soak for a while, stew thoroughly, cut into thick slices, and dry.
