[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of Aspidistra ovata, a plant of the Liliaceae family.

[Original morphology] Aspidistra ovata is a perennial herb. The rhizome is thick, nearly cylindrical, prostrate and horizontal, with many fibrous roots, nodes and scales. 2-3 leaves grow in clusters at the root; petiole 12-21cm long, hard, with grooves on the upper side; leaf blade broad, ovate, needle-shaped to ovate, 18-32cm long, 7-12cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, rounded or nearly rounded at the base, nearly unequal on both sides, curled when young. The flowers are brown or light red, solitary, with short pedicels; the perianth is bell-shaped, 10-18mm in diameter, with purple dots on the outside and dark purple on the inside; there are 6-8 stamens, born at the base of the perianth tube, lower than the stigma; the ovary is short, the style is thick and short, and the stigma is broad and shield-shaped. The berries are spherical. Flowering period is August-September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in dense forests in deep mountains, valleys, and moist places beside streams.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The rhizome is nearly cylindrical, about 7mm in diameter, with slender fibrous roots. The appearance is yellow-brown, with nodes and scales.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; pungent; slightly warm

【Functions and indications】Promote blood circulation and dissipate blood stasis; set bones and relieve pain; detoxify snake venom. Mainly used for rheumatic pain; low back pain caused by kidney deficiency; traumatic injury; snake bite

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 15-30g. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application.
