The Central Axis of Beijing is the symmetry axis of the east-west symmetrical layout of buildings in Beijing since the Yuan Dynasty's Dadu and the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It takes the Forbidden City as its center, extends to the Bell and Drum Tower in the north and to Yongdingmen in the south. It is 7.8 kilometers long and covers about 65% of the area of the old city of Beijing. This city axis has both magnificent royal buildings, quaint residential courtyards and important modern and contemporary buildings. The Taimiao, Shejitan, Temple of Heaven, Xiannongtan and other buildings around the central axis are all basically intact. The central axis of Beijing starts from Yongdingmen in the outer city in the south, passes through Zhengyangmen, Zhonghuamen, Tiananmen, Duanmen, Wumen, Taihemen in the inner city, crosses the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Central Harmony, the Hall of Preserving Harmony, the Palace of Heavenly Purity, the Palace of Earthly Tranquility, the Gate of Shenwu, crosses the Wanjing Pavilion on Wansui Mountain, the Shouhuang Hall, the Drum Tower, and reaches the center point of the Bell Tower. After nearly half a century of ups and downs, Beijing's Central Axis is still a charming landscape. Today, let's walk into Beijing's Central Axis and see the secrets behind it. |
